As we begin transitioning into Fall, you will notice that “Fall on the Farm” is a busy and exciting time!

The sunflowers are blooming, and our Sunflower Experience begins this Friday!  We are so excited!

Fall apples are starting their season: Early Honey Crisp, Gala, Jonamac, McIntosh, and Mollie’s Delicious.  And the grapes will not be too far behind.  We will (someday!) feel a twinge of cooler air.  The colorful fall ornamentals, squash, and pumpkins are slowly coming out along with changing autumn leaves.

Summer fruits and vegetables like peaches and sweet corn are about to end, so get that last fresh taste while you still can!

Donut flavors are changing with apple cider starting this weekend.  The bakery is making several new baked apple goods for you to try!

There will not be any apple picking this weekend, please see below for more information.

So, stop by for a visit!  This will be a fun weekend on the farm for all!  And you will have the opportunity to experience and taste both Summer and Fall.

Our Guests
These adorable twins with their Strawberry Shortcake outfits, are taste testing apples to find their favorite to take home!  We say they are wearing very appropriate attire for visiting a farm market!
Fall Apple Picking Update

Farming is a risky business, but we joyously do it even though there are no guarantees anything planted will ever be harvested.  A lot can happen to a crop starting with a cold winter through less-than-ideal conditions during the growing and harvesting seasons.  So is the saga of this year’s apple crop.

We ask that you take a moment to read the story of our 2026 Apple Crop.  Due to weather events outside our control and the ensuing crop damage, we will not be able to offer u-pick apples with our early fall varieties starting this weekend as we traditionally have done.

We hope to open the u-pick orchard later in the season, but time will tell if we are able to do so.  We know many of you will be disappointed as that is your family’s time to go apple picking together.  The weather-related damage has also affected what we have to offer on the market.  Please read our story for more information.

Concord and Niagara Grapes Update
We have a good crop of Concord (blue) and Niagara (white) grapes this year.  They are excellent juice grapes (with seeds) and typically do not ripen until mid to late September.  We will have u-pick available by reservation closer to our start time.  Please check back here or the website for updates.  Below, the Concord are starting to show some of their color.
Sunflower Experience 2026

Fresh Produce on the Market

Assorted Fruit

  • Apples – Gala, Jonamac, McIntosh, Mollie’s Delicious.  See apple descriptions at the end of this newsletter.
  • Early Honeycrisp, priced differently, have regular and “not so perfect”
  • Apple quantities are available in small bags to pecks and bushels (for some varieties).  We also have processing/ second quality apples in assorted varieties by the half bushel when available.  (Type of apple depends on what we are sorting and bagging that day).  We also have animal apples that are great for animals and for pressing juice.
  • Flamin’ Fury peaches – One of our favorites and a variety we used to grow.  This latest picking is some of the most beautiful ones yet!  They are a sweet, juicy freestone peach, perfect for eating fresh, canning or freezing.  We should have them available by the quart up to a half bushel.  Call before coming out to pre-order a half bushel to make sure we have them and allow us to get them ready for you.  269-244-5690.  Last week for peaches!
  • Bartlett pears – available by the quart, 2-quart, half peck, peck, half bushel, and bushel.  Pears are picked green as they ripen from the inside out, and it takes 7-10 days to ripen.
  • Castleton plums (a prune plum), freestone, from a quart to a half bushel, nearly gone for the season!
Our Mollie’s Delicious apples are ginormous this year!  That’s what happens when frost takes away some of the early apples from the tree, leaving the rest of them to have lots of room to grow!
While you are visiting the market, be sure to try our apples, plums, and pears and find your new favorites!
Assorted summer vegetables – brussel sprouts, cabbage, carrots, garlic, sweet onions, assorted peppers, sweet corn (last weekend), tomatoes, spaghetti squash, yellow summer squash, zucchini

Fall squash – Just starting: delicata, acorn, and butternut

Below, a load of colorful, freshly picked vegetables headed from the field to the market.  Enjoy them now as we are quickly nearing the end of the harvest season for some!

This is the last weekend to get our “baseball bat” size zucchini!  We are always surprised how many of these we sell to folks who are trying to freeze zucchini for making bread, casserole, and other items in the winter.
Bankson Lake Farms produce – lettuces, spinach, kale, and mushrooms, arriving Friday morning

Ice cold slushies – apple cider, blueberry lemonade, peach

Fresh cut flower bar – Make your own bouquets from assorted flowers.  It has been so fun to see everyone’s creative and lovely bouquets.  Available Thursday through Sunday.  Last weekend!!

Fall ornamentals – a few early gourds just arrived along with the first mums to get us into an autumn mood!  The mums will even be lovelier once they are in full bloom.
Bulk Produce
We will have produce available in bulk quantities for those who can, freeze, or preserve food.  We encourage you to preserve food as it is a healthier option than processed and you know the source of your food.  See the food preservation page on our website for tips and how-to information.

We maintain lists of people interested in various produce and will contact you when they are available.  Please stop by or call us to hold something for you.

Last weekend or until sold out for:

  • Peaches – preorder or walk in, pecks and half bushels.  Last week!
  • Plums – Castleton (a prune plum), freestone, pecks and half bushels.  Last weekend!

Happenings on the Farm
Someone has to be different….
We took this photo about ten days ago when we were cutting paths through the sunflower field.
Sunrises
There is a whisper of fall in the air …. and we love our late summer, early fall sunrises!
Apple Harvest
We are starting to harvest our fall apples.  The harvest started earlier this year and is going quicker with less of a crop.

Below our Jonamac apples, harvest completed in 7 hours, normally takes two days.

We finished picking the Gala crop in one day, usually it takes us three days.  That is how light the early apple crop is compared to other years.
The Cortland apples will be ready soon.  They have a nice size and color this year.
Beth’s favorite sign in her office…..
Chive Blossoms
The chives in our herb garden are lovely right now – large white blossoms that will eventually turn purple.  Bees and other beneficial insects love the chive flowers!

Chive blossoms are fully edible and taste like a sweet onion with a hint of garlic.  Just pull the tiny star-shaped petals apart and sprinkle them over salads, soups, or eggs.

Apple Descriptions

Early Honeycrisp.  Everyone’s favorite.  Crisp with an excellent sweet flavor and a “bite”.  Great for eating fresh or in salads.  Keep refrigerated and use within two weeks.
Gala.  A great eating and cooking apple.  It has a crisp snappy bite over a mellow sweetness.  Makes a sweet applesauce (no additional sugar needed) or mix with a tarter apple to sweeten that sauce.
Ginger Gold.  One of the best early seasons eating apples.  Sweet and mildly tart flavor.  Great for salads and snacks as they are slow to turn brown, and cooking and baking.
Jonamac.  A cross between Jonathan and McIntosh apples, similar to a McIntosh in taste, but sweeter.  Firm flesh, crisp sweet/tart flavor.  Good for fresh eating, salads, and applesauce.
McIntosh.  Aromatic, juicy, sweet, and tangy tart.  The tender white flesh of the McIntosh makes it an old time favorite.
Mollie’s Delicious.  A large, sweet, eating apple (not for cooking).

Thank you for your continued support and buying local.
Everyone at Corey Lake Orchards wishes you a
safe and restful Labor Day holiday!
