Transitioning from Spring to Early Summer

Strawberry season has started – we welcome our first fruit of the year!  They are delicious and will give you that perfectly sweet taste of spring!

Our asparagus and rhubarb are quietly slipping away until next season so be sure to get that last asparagus for dinner!  We hope to have it through the weekend, or until whenever we sell out.  Soon we will have other spring vegetables to offer you.

But exciting news of the season!  Beth enjoyed her first BLT this week with lettuce from Bankson Lake Farms, bread from our bakery, Cottage bacon from Jake’s Country Meats, and tomatoes from our greenhouse!!

And now you can join her as all of these will be on the market.

Celebrate National Donut Day with Us!

Friday, June 5 is National Donut Day.  This food holiday celebrates the delicious doughnut and honors the Salvation Army Lassies, who in case you didn’t know, are the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during WWI.

In honor of this special day and the start of strawberry season, we will be making Strawberries and Cream donuts this Friday.  Stop by and try this special flavor.  We will continue to make them into Saturday and Sunday, along with blueberry and buttermilk, unless we run out of strawberry.

Strawberry Update
We grow several varieties of strawberries that ripen at different times.  We are still working our way through the early berry harvest and the damage caused by the frosts in May at our farm, and are supplementing from another local farm.  Please be aware that most southwest Michigan farms had frost damage, limiting the berry quantity.

We are at least a week away from getting into the normal June mid-season berries.  Until they are more plentiful, we will not have 8-quart flats available.

We hope to have berries available by the quart and possibly some 5-quart boxes this Friday through Sunday.  Our quart pricing is $6, the same as last year.

Berries are picked fresh each day (weather permitting).  Please give us until about 11 am to have them at the market, packaged, and ready to go.

Please watch for updates throughout the day before driving out as things may change.  We will primarily be using our Facebook page and our answering machine (269-244-5690) to communicate the availability of strawberries throughout the day and the season.  You can also check our website.  We know your time and the cost of fuel is valuable and we don’t want you to come for berries if we are sold out.

Availability can vary each day as it depends on the amount picked.  Please note that we are not taking advance orders and have switched to “same day, set aside” orders only.  We encourage you to call us; we are happy to set aside berries until you can pick them up later that day.  If we miss your call, leave your name and phone number, and one of our staff will call you back as quickly as possible.

Strawberry U-Pick.  We have a small field and hope to have strawberries for u-pick when our late variety comes in, mid-June.  There will be a four-quart limit, our strawberry picking is mostly for the “experience.”  Please check back for updates.

If you want to pick larger quantities, we recommend River Valley Farms in Constantine once they open for strawberries.  Please check their Facebook page for information.   You can also check MichiganFarmFun to find other berry picking locations near you.

Fresh Produce on the Market
Asparagus and Rhubarb.  This is the last call for this true taste of spring!  You don’t want to miss having some!  Asparagus is much better when eaten fresh!

Bulk quantities are still available.  Please call ahead at (269-244-5690) if interested in 20 pounds or more so we can have it ready for you to pick up.  Buying 10 lbs. or more is discounted.

Tomatoes, first of the season from our greenhouse.

Lettuces, spinach, kale, and mushrooms freshly picked from Bankson Lake Farms, arriving Friday mornings.

Ice cold slushies – apple cider and strawberry lemonade.  A third flavor coming soon!

Plants
Hanging flower baskets – last weekend!

Basil – Three kinds of basil for you to plant in your own pot or in your backyard making it easy to grab basil whenever you need it!
Mini tomato plants – same tomatoes as many of you get every year from us but they are in smaller pots that you can transplant into your own pots and add a cage around them!

Happenings on the Farm
Irrigate.  Irrigate.  Irrigate.
We are irrigating like crazy with this dry spell going on.  The lack of water at such a critical time when our fruit is growing and sizing is very hard on our orchards and vineyards.
Finally! The tomatoes are coming!
Nice slicers and mini tomatoes!
The cukes (see one hiding in the center) are gaining size.
Saying Goodbye to a Community Treasure
At the end of the school year, Norton Elementary closed its doors for the last time.  The school has been more than just a neighbor; it has been an integral part of our farm family for decades.  We are truly saddened to say goodbye.  We will miss the staff, teachers, students, and their families.

Corey Lake Orchards stopped by with a luncheon treat for the staff on that bittersweet day.  Over the years, CLO staff and owners have attended Norton and are now proud Wildcat alumni!  Staff members and alumni serving lunch included Beth, Cay, Alyx, and Sophia, along with principal Lisa.

Thank you for your continued support and for buying local.
Everyone at Corey Lake Orchards wishes you a wonderful
start to your summer!
