We wish everyone a happy and safe 4th of July weekend!  Yes, we will be open on Independence Day, July 4th!

Happenings on the Farm

We emptied the rain gauge, a lot!  We worried about storms, the winds, and how hard the rain was, a lot!  We got our boots stuck in the mud trying to harvest vegetables.  We have standing water in fields that we cannot get into.  When it was all over, we had close to 6 inches of rain, more than our rain gauge holds!  We were in a drought, and it was so needed, but how much and how fast made for a stressful week for most farmers!

On The Market

The market is well stocked with a variety of summer vegetables!

Greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers.  Tomatoes are sold pre-packed in a 2-pound box.  See clerk for smaller amounts.  We also have some field grown cucumbers and tomatoes this week from Indiana to supplement our greenhouse ones.

Herbs.  The herbs are ready to pick in the herb garden.  So, bring your recipes and add fresh herbs to your cooking.

Yellow Squash and Zucchini.  We are picking lots and lots of these right now!  Take advantage of our zucchini special and add grilled zucchini to your weekend menu – buy 2 at $1.50 each and get 1 free.  Yellow squash are $1 each.  If you like sweet and sour cucumbers, try making sweet and sour zucchini spears.

We have some of the best-looking squash vines that we have seen in years!

Kale/ Broccoli/ Swiss Chard/ Kohlrabi.  If you haven’t, please try a Kohlrabi, they are quite delightful to use on a tray of cut vegetables, with dip or not!

Cauliflower.  Is available in several colors from traditional white to purple.

Bankson Lake Farms Produce.  Dan will be bringing us fresh lettuce mix, mushrooms, green onions, radishes, beets, carrots, and garlic scapes this weekend.

Grocery Items.  Assortment of local meat, cheese, yogurt, eggs, jam, jelly, salsa, maple syrup, honey, chips, tortilla chips, ice cream and more.

Gift Items.  Assorted greeting cards, pottery, artwork, sculptures, Mad Mats, and more.  Below Peggy is unloading a shipment of new Mad Mats.  Pick up one this weekend while the selection is good to decorate your outdoor living space!

Blueberries

U-Pick.  Our early variety of blueberries are ready and we will be opening our field for u-pick starting Friday.  We have a small field so this is for those wanting to pick just a small quantity for the experience.  The field is open starting at 9am, and these bushes are low – perfect for children.  See our Blueberry U-Pick page on our website for prices, hours, and more details.

If you want to pick larger quantities, check with Brookside Farms in Paw Paw. They have a delightful farm for you to visit and pick at – 269-657-3500 or check their website:  https://brooksidefarmsmi.com/

We also hope to have some already picked blueberries from Brookside Farms starting this weekend.   They have been our blueberry supplier for a number of years.

Fruit Pies.  This year our pies are frozen “take and bake” only; we no longer offer “ready to eat” pies.  Having them frozen allows us to offer a full variety of pies every day the market is open, not just on weekends.  If you are driving far, bring a cooler or insulated freezer bag.  The pies are simple to bake, take about an hour, ready to bake when you need them, and give your house a mouthwatering aroma!  So far customers are liking this better.  The pies are hot right out of your oven, plus extra pies can be tucked in the freezer for that time when you need a dessert!  Baking directions are included on each pie.

Pie Varieties:  Apple, Dutch Apple, Blueberry, Cherry, Cherry Berry, Peach, and Strawberry-Rhubarb.

Slushies.  With the heat of summer already here, enjoy a nice cold slushie!  We have Strawberry, Mango, Strawberry-Mango mix, or Cider.

We have a nice selection of alcohol produced on the farm.

  • Fruit brandy in 375ml and 750ml sizes
  • 2 sweet wines – Double Cherry and Peach and Honey.  Look for several drier wines coming soon!
  • Hard cider in 12-ounce bottles.  You can purchase them individually or mix and match them in a discounted 4- or 6-pack.

Many of our customers love our Double Cherry Wine!  It is a true fruit wine made from fresh Michigan grown cherries.  The fruit aroma of ripe cherries and the crisp tartness of the natural fruit is captured in this lightly sweet bright red wine.  We have many repeat customers for this wine.
