This week we finished picking all of the apple varieties. This was one of our largest apple crops, so we are grateful to be finished. We are excited to share some of our late varieties with you (Goldrush, Granny Smith and Winesap!) and also share in the bounty of the harvest with an end of season sale.
This week marks our last regular business week of the year and an excellent opportunity to stock up on items for the upcoming winter months. Shop our “buy two, get one free” sale on many items (see below). We are motivated to clear the cold storage and barns as we wrap up our harvest season!
We will be open for the first three Saturdays in November from 9 am to 3 pm for apple and produce sales, local grocery items to stock up on like honey, maple syrup products, and take and bake pies to get into your freezer for the upcoming holidays or your winter stash! We will also be open additional Saturdays in December and possibly January for apple sales until they are gone.
If you have a Fall gathering or event this week, note that we will be making our delicious donuts starting Thursday. And get your cider while we have it as we are not pressing any more this year! |

Update on our Holiday Market |
|
|
We will not be having a Holiday Market this year.
Many of you have stopped by our Holiday Market for the past several years and enjoyed meeting Santa and Mrs. Claus. Due to Santa and Mrs. Claus being extra busy in the North Pole this year making sure all the children around the world have special gifts and holiday cheer, they are unable to make a visit to Corey Lake Orchard this season. They do hope you can still provide some orchard apples for their reindeer when Santa’s sleigh comes by on Christmas Eve. Don’t forget those red apples help make Rudolph’s nose shine so brightly! |

We have pressed our last batch of cider for the year and hope to have it through the weekend, but no guarantees. We recommend you get it sooner than later as we may run out.
Our fresh apple cider is $9 a gallon, the same price as last year.
There are several changes this year.
- Our cider is being custom pressed and bottled in Coloma. It is still made with our apples and our blend of apples.
- The cider is UV treated, but not pasteurized.
- After opening, it is best to drink it within a week. Freeze what you can’t drink; cider freezes well.
- Keep the cider refrigerated.

Several orchards are open for “gleaning.” Gleaning is our end of season “orchard cleanup” where you can pick what was left behind (skipped over) on the trees by our crew or on the ground for $10 a bushel. Here is how it works.
- Check in and out at the market, do not go directly to the orchard.
- Sold in whole bushels only. For example, if you pick 3.5 bushels, you will be charged for 4 bushels. If you pick a half bushel, you will be charged for a bushel.
- Orchard hours are 9 am to 5:30 pm and 9 am to 3:30 pm (Sunday). Arrive early enough to allow time for picking.
- Please bring containers to take your apples home.
- We can loan you a basket for measuring.
- You are welcome to bring a kitchen stool or small ladder; regular ladders are not allowed.
- No climbing trees please.

Fall Apples – What’s Currently Available |
|
|
Please note that many of these apples are only available on the market or as u-pick. Check respective sections above for a list of what is available in u-pick or the market.
Braeburn. Sweet with a hint of tart, and a firmness that stores well. These traits plus the fact that they bake well have made them a very versatile apple.
Cameo. A firm, crisp, and sweet apple that resists browning. Great for fresh eating, applesauce, or baking. Keeps well in your refrigerator.
Cortland. A hint of tartness makes this a great earing, cooking, and baking variety. A descendent of the McIntosh. It’s a bit sweeter than its ancestor and juices really well.
Fuji. An incredibly sweet flavor, low acid content, and crisp. Excellent all-purpose use for snacking, baking, and cooking.
Gala. A crisp, snappy bite over mellow sweetness. It is Michigan’s 3rd most popular apple! Very versatile, great for eating or cooking.
Gold Rush. Tart when initially harvested, but when kept in storage, the flavor balances, creating a sweet, acidic, and tangy taste. A cross between Golden Delicious with Rome Beauty and Winesap. Stores for months.
Granny Smith. A bright green apple with gray dots. The apple is tart making it good for pies and fresh eating. The traditional “sour green” apple.
Honeycrisp. A people’s favorite. It is crisp with an excellent sweet flavor and a “bite” to it. Great for eating fresh or using in salads. Keeps only several weeks.
Ida Red.. Suits your every use! Eat fresh or for cooking. Taste is both tangy and tart. Flesh is white, crisp and juicy. Favored for sauces, pies and desserts. Texture holds up well when baked.
Jonathan. Pretty and popular, used for fresh eating and cooking, a favorite for apple butter and taffy apples.
McIntosh. An old time favorite. An aromatic, juicy, sweet, and tangy tart. The tender white flesh and distinctive flavor makes it great for applesauce.
Mutsu. Also called Crispin, it is a cross between Golden Delicious and the Japanese Indo apple. It has a sweet-honeyed flavor mixed with sharp, tangy, and acidic notes. They can be stored until spring.
Northern Spy. The professional baker’s dream, cooks up well in applesauce, pie and other dishes. Stores well, easy to remember by saying “Spies for pies”.
Pink Lady. Medium size apple with a firm, crisp flesh, and a tart taste with a sweet finish. Stores well.
Red Delicious. America’s most popular apple, known for the “five little bumps” on the bottom. Best for fresh eating and snacks. Full-flavored sweet taste, yellowish flesh, and crisp texture.
Red Rome. A big, round, red apple right out of storybooks! They have a mild, sweet flavor. Most popular for baking because it holds flavor and shape well.
Yellow Delicious. A gingery-smooth, sweet taste under a thin skin. It is the most popular yellow apple, good eaten fresh, baked or cut in salads. Makes a nice apple sauce and many people use for canning pie filling.
Winesap. A well-known American heirloom apple. It has a firm, juicy, light yellow flesh with a wine-like sweet-tart flavor. It is an all-purpose apple that stores well, and it is favored for cider-making. |
