Our recent hot days herald the summer season and many fruits and vegetables are quickly ripening.  This is the time of year to see an abundance of choices, and the many colors of summer.  We have whites, blues, yellows, lots of shades of greens, reds, purples, and many shades in-between.  This is the time of year to leave the market not only with nutritious food but a box of gorgeous colors!
We enjoyed the bachelorette ladies who braved the heat to pick blueberries but were rewarded with a happy hour.  Congratulations to the lovely bride Colleen and we wish her all the best!
National Ice Cream Day is Sunday, July 21
Celebrate the cool and creamy taste of ice cream of the day by picking up a gallon of our quality Plainwell Vanilla Ice Cream made locally in Plainwell.  Vanilla is traditionally made by combining cream, sugar, and of course, vanilla.  Vanilla ice cream has a wide fanbase as it is the single most popular ice cream flavor around the world.  The cold dessert’s subtle flavors allow you to enjoy it in a variety of ways.  Our favorite ways are over a slice of one of our fruit pies, or just plain with a handful of blueberries on top.
Produce Update
Seasonal produce is ripening several weeks ahead of schedule this year due to our warmer than usual weather.  Please rewire your brains and calendars to crops coming 10 days earlier than normal.  Watch our newsletter for updates so you don’t miss your favorite fruits and vegetables!

Sweet Corn
It is now in season.  We sell it by the ear, half dozen, dozen, and 5-dozen bushels.  We try to keep a few bushels on hand, but if you can call in advance that helps us to have it ready for you.

Green Beans, Pickling Cukes, and Peppers – Bulk Quantities
If you need vegetables in bulk for canning, freezing, etc. please call the market for pricing and to preorder.  269-244-5690.Lodi Apples
We are picking our first apple of the year – Lodi, an early summer variety.  It is a tart and softer apple compared to fall varieties and is excellent for applesauce or fresh eating.  They are for sale in quarter pecks, half pecks, pecks, half bushel, and bushels.

We recommend you keep them refrigerated and use them right away.  These apples only keep for a few weeks.

We have a very limited supply this year due to the spring frost.  If you are interested in a peck or more of them, please call the market so we can set them aside for you for pick up this week.

Blueberry Update
We have already picked blueberries on the market from our long-term supplier, Brookside Farms.  They are available by the pint, quart, 5-pound box, and 10-pound box.We also have a small u-pick blueberry field open when the market is open.  We have plenty to pick right now, but if we run short of blueberries to pick, we may have to limit the amount that each family can pick.  Our small field is mainly a place where you can bring your family for a berry picking experience and leave with a few to take home.

If you are looking to pick a quantity to make pies, jam, freeze, etc. we recommend you contact Brookside Farms in Paw Paw.  They have many acres of u-pick blueberries and are very family oriented.  Call them at (269) 657-3500 or check their Facebook page for updates.

We have a number of blueberry products on the market.  Products include:  Fresh blueberries – already picked and u-pick; blueberry pie; blueberry fry pie; blueberry donuts; blueberry muffins; Blueberry-Zucchini bread; Blueberry Salsa; blueberry jam and dried blueberries.

Grocery
New this week we have Brown Butter Ghee and Salted Butter made by Amish Country Dairy in Shipshewana.  They are just in time to go on our delicious sweet corn!Brown butter ghee is a fusion of brown butter and ghee.  Brown butter is regular butter that’s heated until the milk solids turn brown.  It has a rich, toasty flavor and is often used in baking and savory dishes.  Ghee is a type of clarified butter commonly used in Indian cuisine.  It’s made by simmering butter to evaporate moisture and separate milk solids. The result is a golden, nutty-flavored fat that’s lactose-free and has a high smoke point.  Ghee is great for cooking as it does not burn easily.

We have a great selection of local products we know you will enjoy:
