Thank you to the many visitors that stopped by over the July 4th weekend.  And congratulations to the Gaŗezers’ celebrating their 60th anniversary.  We enjoyed seeing many of our ‘regular’ summer customers back for the season!

Over the weekend, we introduced several new items – our Flower Bar, a new blueberry-strawberry lemonade slushie flavor, and already baked mini pies.  They were all popular!  We will continue baking mini pies Friday through Sunday only.  During this prime season for blooms, the Flower Bar will be available on Fridays through Sunday through mid-August.

It’s baaack!!  Our world famous blueberry-zucchini bread starts this week!

We hope to see you this week!

We are Being Overrun and Need your Help!

Our cucumbers, zucchini, and yellow squash are too plentiful right now because of the heat.  This is the time to incorporate them into your meals as they are good for you and on special right now!

How do you plan to use them?  Cooking, frying, sauteing, baking them?  Using them fresh?  Serving them alone or as part of another dish?

Please share your ideas with us so we can pass them along to other customers looking for ways to use our “have too many because of the heat” vegetables.  Just send them through our website and we will compile your tips and ideas in our next several newsletters.  Thank you!!  We are grateful for your help!

Looking Ahead

  • Cherries, Sweet or Tart – We no longer grow any and will not be able to get any from another farm this year.  The sweet cherry crop in Michigan was light this year and has already ended on the west side of the state.
  • Blueberries – In season, already picked and u-pick.
  • Summer Vegetables –now and continuing through August.  We have a wide variety of vegetables; there is something for everyone.
  • Sweet Corn – hopefully in about a week
  • Canning Tomatoes – probably starting early August
  • Peaches – we no longer grow any but will try to get some from another farm.
  • Summer apples – starting mid July, these are typically softer and tarter varieties for fresh eating and cooking.  Lodi is our first apple of the season.
Blueberries and U-Pick Blueberries
Already Picked
We have already picked blueberries from Brookside Farms in Paw Paw, our long term supplier.  They are available by the pint, quart, 5-pound box, and 10-pound box.  The season typically lasts through early August.
U-Pick
Our small field opens at 9 am and closes when the market closes.  Please note that berries are best picked in the coolness of the morning as they tend to get soft in warmer temperatures.  (And many pickers get hot and tired).  The field may be closed for ripening or inclement weather so call or check the website before you come.  Currently the daily limit per family/group is four quarts (may vary during the season).  Our small field is mainly a place where you can bring your family for a berry picking experience and leave with a few to take home.
If you are looking to pick a larger quantity to make pies, jam, freeze, etc. we recommend you contact Brookside Farms.  They have many acres of u-pick blueberries and are very family oriented.  Call (269) 657-3500 or check their Facebook page for updates.

Grocery
We offer select grocery products like salad dressing, jam, jelly, salsa, fresh eggs, cheese, yogurt, fresh milk, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, crackers, chips, meats, dog treats, and more.  We focus on offering products from companies located in Michigan, to support Michigan-grown and Michigan-made!

Summer Meals just got Easier!
During these summer months, we suggest some tasty light meals from the farm.

Breakfast. A light fare of yogurt, granola, and fresh blueberries!  So good you can eat it every morning for breakfast!  The yogurt from Mattawan Artisan Creamery is some of the best around.  The granola is made in Michigan by Teffola using ancient grains.  And pick your fresh blueberries from our counter or from our field!

Lunch. America’s favorite summer sandwich is back – the BLT!  We bet you can eat one multiple times a week during the summer season!  We have the best tasting tomatoes anywhere served with bread from our bakery, leaf lettuce from Bankson Lake Farms, and farm-raised bacon from Jake’s Country Meats.  We recommend you use Jake’s cottage bacon which is the same size as a slice of bread.  And yes, add some chips from Great Lakes and a cookie from our bakery!

Alcohol
We have a variety of spirits, wines, and hard ciders – most made on the farm using our surplus fruit and cider.

We will have wine and hard cider tastings this Saturday starting at 10 am on our breezeway next to the market.  Try some and find your new favorites!

Sit and Play Areas
We have seating areas around the market for you to rest, enjoy a bite or drink, or play a game.  We also have many tables and chairs in our ‘Onion Barn’, a covered pavilion at the top of the hill behind the market.  We have a small children’s playground.  Meet up with friends or just take a needed break in the countryside!
Gifts
We carry an assortment of gift items from local artisans.
The Recipe Rack
Ideas for Using Fresh Produce
Over the years, we’ve collected an assortment of recipes that use our produce.  We haven’t tried them all, but we look for recipes that we would like to eat and are relatively easy to make.  We invite you to visit the recipe page on our website for ideas.

7 Ways to Take Cucumber Salad from Summer Side to Star
Looking for a good side dish?  Look no further than a cucumber salad.

Cucumbers are a cooling counterpart for hot food and hot weather.  Their juicy crunch cuts through char, spice and richness, and mixing them into a salad doesn’t take much time or even any cooking.  But there are just a few tricks to ensure they’re utterly refreshing.

Below is the traditional cucumber-tomato-onion salad – and we have what you need to make it!

But don’t stop with just this one!  This article from the New York Times features seven delicious ways to take your cucumber salads to new, more exciting heights.

Blueberry Buckle
This blueberry buckle recipe from Taste of Home bakes up a tender, blueberry-loaded snacking cake with a knobbly cinnamon topping.  A blueberry buckle is similar in style to a coffee cake, but it’s studded with plump blueberries instead of a cinnamon-sugar swirl.
Happenings on the Farm
It’s the height of summer season, which means behind the scenes we’re trying to find enough space and containers to hold all the produce coming in and, in the bakery, there’s a daily contest on who can get the ovens first!  This means heavy lifting going on everywhere, and we mean that literally!

And once again, we are waging an all-out battle on the many weeds which seem to thrive in the summer’s heat! ☹

Lodi Apples.  The Lodi are almost ready.  They make great tart applesauce!

Thank you for your continued support and for buying local.
Everyone at Corey Lake Orchards wishes you a safe
and happy summer!
