Thanks to all of you who donated your time to pick extra blueberries for a local food bank this past weekend.  We were able to make a nice donation!

Our many flower gardens by the market continue their summer bloom season!  Our weekend Flower Bar has continued to be popular.  It’s a nice way to personalize a bouquet with the size, type, and colors you want.  Flowers are best picked early in the morning before the day’s heat.  We pick them early and keep them in water and shade, giving you time during our business hours to “pick your own” from our display table!

And we have a market full of “fresh picks” – produce straight from the field!  Stock up and eat well while the summer season is here!

July is National Blueberry Month!  Find facts on this fabulous fruit and reasons you should eat more of them at the end of the newsletter.

We hope to see you this week!

Looking Ahead

  • Blueberries – In season, already picked and u-pick.
  • Summer Vegetables –now and continuing through August.  We have a wide variety of vegetables; there is something for everyone.
  • Sweet Corn – we are hoping within 10 days, weather has caused some early corn growing issues
  • Canning Tomatoes – probably starting early August
  • Peaches – typically August.  We no longer grow any but will try to get some from another farm.
  • Summer Apples – Lodi, our first apple of the season, is ready.  Summer variety apples are typically softer and tarter, good for applesauce, fresh eating, and cooking.
Blueberries and U-Pick Blueberries
Already Picked
We have already picked blueberries from Brookside Farms in Paw Paw, our long term supplier.  They are available by the pint, quart, 5-pound box, and 10-pound box.  The season typically lasts through early August.
U-Pick
Our small field opens at 9 am and closes when the market closes.  Please note that berries are best picked in the coolness of the morning as they tend to get soft in warmer temperatures.  (And many pickers get hot and tired!)

With the many people picking last weekend, many of the bushes are now emptied, which was our goal!  Thanks.  There are still some to pick, but not as plentiful as they were earlier.  Our small field is mainly a place where you can bring your family for a berry picking experience and leave with a few to take home.

If you are looking to pick a larger quantity to make pies, jam, freeze, etc. we recommend you contact Brookside Farms.  They have many acres of u-pick blueberries and are very family oriented.  Call (269) 657-3500 or check their Facebook page for updates.

Meatballs with Blueberry Sriracha Sauce
These sweet and spicy blueberry meatballs are going to be the hit of your next summer cookout!  A simple slow-cooker recipe is the best way to prepare them, and this recipe will not disappoint!
July is National Blueberry Month
These mighty blues are Michigan’s pride and joy.  Frozen, dried and juiced blueberries and blueberry products can be enjoyed throughout the year.

According to the Michigan Ag Council:

  • In 2023, Michigan produced more than 87 million pounds of blueberries on nearly 17,000 acres.
  • Michigan is a top producer of blueberries in the U.S. with over 20 varieties grown.
  • Michigan blueberries are grown, harvested, and processed by 600 family farms
  • Most of Michigan’s commercial blueberry production is located in southwest Michigan where sandy glacial soils and high-water tables result in excellent blueberry soils.
  • More than 50 percent of Michigan blueberries are shipped to the fresh market, with the rest frozen, pureed, concentrated, or canned for value-added products

And blueberries are good for you!

  • Blueberries have only 80 calories per cup and virtually no fat
  • Blueberries have consistently been recognized as the fruit with the highest antioxidant activity
  • Blueberries are also packed with vitamins, including A and C, both which support a healthy immune system (One serving contains almost 25% of the daily vitamin C requirements).
  • Blueberries are also a good source of manganese, for bone development, dietary fiber, for heart health, and polyphenols which possess anti-inflammatory properties.
Thank you for your continued support and for buying local.
Everyone at Corey Lake Orchards wishes you a safe
and happy summer!
