The sweet corn season starts this week!  We’ve been patiently waiting for those tasty, creamy kernels to appear.  Fresh sweet corn is summer’s signature crop, a traditional summer fare.  Locally grown, fresh-picked Michigan corn is the best.  It can be a side dish or served as a meal by itself!  It can be steamed, grilled, or boiled – and seasoned with salt, butter, or any variety of spices – or eaten straight from the stalk.

Enjoy the season!  It typically lasts through Labor Day but with our Michigan weather, there are no guarantees.

Our Pure Michigan weather looks like a return to high heat this week.  Once again, we will have our “too many problem” with the summer vegetables as the heat causes too many of them to ripen at once. ☹  See our recipe section below for ways to enjoy zucchini!

So, if you want bulk green beans and pickling cucumbers, this is the week to get them!  Call ahead and we can have them ready for you.  269-244-5690.

These ladies had to make their way around our produce bins to find a place to sit down and catch up for a minute!
We want to thank the customers who picked extra Blueberries for us for donating to the local foodbank.

We hope to see you this week!

Looking Ahead

  • Blueberries – In season, already picked and u-pick.
  • Summer Vegetables –now and continuing through August.  We have a wide variety of vegetables; there is something for everyone.
  • Sweet Corn – just starting.  Available in bulk quantities hopefully in several weeks.
  • Canning Tomatoes – probably starting early August
  • Peaches – typically August.  We no longer grow any but will try to get some from another farm.
  • Summer apples – Last week for Lodi, our first apple of the season.  Summer variety apples are typically softer and tarter, good for applesauce, fresh eating, and cooking.
Local Camp Events
Several of our local camps have noteworthy events this week!  We are fortunate to be surrounded by several local camps.  We have enjoyed seeing several generations now of parents/campers return to visit the farm while they are in the area.   We also supply produce to many of their kitchens, plus we have become the “go to” place for the counselors to hang out during their off hours with a cold slushy and baked goods.

Congratulations to Camp Wakeshma celebrating their 100-year anniversary this Saturday!  Over the years, we have enjoyed seeing the families that stop by when dropping off/picking up their campers.

The Latvian Center Garezers are hosting their annual volleyball tournament this weekend.  We welcome the volleyball players and their families arriving at this special event!

On Sunday, we welcome the Camp Tavor bikers to the farm.  They will be finishing up the last mile of their annual Chicago to Three Rivers bike ride before heading to the camp across the lake.

Another Engagement Happens at CLO!
We were delighted that Kylie and Joe chose to get engaged in our blueberry field while picking blueberries together!  We wish them a lifetime of happiness!
Blueberries and U-Pick Blueberries
Already Picked
We have already picked blueberries from Brookside Farms in Paw Paw, our long term supplier.  They are available by the pint, quart, 5-pound box, and 10-pound box.  The season typically lasts through early August.
U-Pick
Our small field opens at 9 am and closes when the market closes.  Please note that berries are best picked in the coolness of the morning as they tend to get soft in warmer temperatures.  (And many pickers get hot and tired!)

The Jersey variety is ripening now and are very good though smaller in size.  Our Duke berries have been picked.  Our small field is mainly a place where you can bring your family for a berry picking experience and leave with a few to take home.  Just like this family!

If you are looking to pick a larger quantity to make pies, jam, freeze, etc. we recommend you contact Brookside Farms.  They have many acres of u-pick blueberries and are very family oriented.  Call (269) 657-3500 or check their Facebook page for updates.

Across the Market
Bulk Produce
Green Beans, Pickling Cukes, Peppers, Sweet Corn, and Summer Apples – Bulk Quantities
If you need vegetables or summer apples in bulk for canning, freezing, or pickling, please stop by or call the market for pricing and to preorder.  269-244-5690.   See our food preservation information in the recipe section below.

If you are looking for Lodi apples, pickling cukes, or green beans, this is the week to get them!

Pickling cukes.  Most of our pickling cucumbers are 3 to 4 inches due to the heat making them grow so quickly.  They will work for bread and butter pickles or can be cut into spears for dill.  We have a lot coming in right now, so this is the time to be pickling!  Please note, we do not have any dill right now.  Get a peck of pickles….or a gallon or a half bushel!

Lodi apples.  This is our last week for them so get them now for applesauce or other uses.
Green beans.  This is a great week to get bushels or half bushels of green beans while they are available.

If you miss us, please leave your name and phone number on the recorder and someone will call you back to get the details and confirm.  We do not accept orders left on voicemail.

Grocery
We offer select grocery products like salad dressing, jam, jelly, salsa, fresh eggs, cheese, yogurt, fresh milk, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, crackers, chips, meats, dog treats, and more.  We focus on offering products from companies located in Michigan, to support Michigan-grown and Michigan-made!

We carry pure, vanilla ice cream from Plainwell Ice Cream Company.  It goes great with our fruits and berries, strawberry shortcakes, apple crisp, or just by itself!  This third generation, family-owned business creates exceptional ice cream, all by hand.

Alcohol
We have a variety of spirits, wines, and hard ciders – most made on the farm using our surplus fruit and cider.

Try our Double Cherry Wine this week!  It is a sweet red and is one of our most popular wines.  Enjoy its nice taste – fruity with an abundance of cherries.

Sit and Play Areas
We have seating areas around the market for you to rest, enjoy a bite or drink, or play a game.  We also have many tables and chairs in our ‘Onion Barn’, a covered pavilion at the top of the hill behind the market.  We have a small children’s playground.  Meet up with friends or just take a needed break in the countryside!
Gifts
We carry an assortment of gift items from local artisans.

Ideas for Using Fresh Produce
Over the years, we’ve collected an assortment of recipes that use our produce.  We haven’t tried them all, but we look for recipes that we would like to eat and are relatively easy to make.  We invite you to visit the recipe page on our website for ideas.

This open crust pie using a simple glaze lets the natural goodness of fresh blueberries shine through!  Perfect just like it is, but even better with a dallop of whipped cream!

10 zucchini recipes to make the most of your summer bounty
Put zucchini to good use with these recipes for sides, mains and sweet treats.

Zucchini is seemingly everywhere this time of year, stacked high on our counters and quickly sprouting up in home gardens.  The summer vegetable is harvested around 60 days after its seeds are sowed – and just one plant can leave home gardeners with more pounds of the prolific green squash than they know what to do with.  Luckily, a surplus of zucchini is not a bad problem to have.  With its mild flavor and high water content, zucchini is excellent at absorbing and lifting the flavors of other ingredients, making it a versatile ingredient that can enhance a range of dishes, including salads, tacos, pastas and even desserts.

And we have a page on our website dedicated to zucchini recipes!
