The Dog Days of Summer have been upon us!  The sweltering heat in the fields and on the market are lingering as we turn the page to August.  It’s been a tough summer with excessive heat, rain, or dryness.

July through mid-August is a GREAT time to enjoy seasonal fruits and vegetables!  This is our favorite time of the year for produce because there is such a wide variety of it, and it comes in so many different colors!  Bright red tomatoes, the greens of broccoli, cukes, beans, and zucchini, yellow squash and sweet corn ears, yellow and red onions, white and purple cauliflower, purple eggplant, orange carrots and mini-tomatoes, and blueberries – just take a moment to let the array of colors soak in when you step onto the market!  And walk out with a colorful assortment!

Summer will soon be over so take the time to eat and enjoy the selection of fruits and vegetables while they are available.  We strive to offer you the freshest and best quality around.

Enjoy these last days for grilling, vacations, spending time outside, enjoying friends and family, and perhaps more high temperatures.  In less than a month, most students will be back in school.

And thanks for stopping by – rain or shine!  We hope to see you this week!

Looking Ahead

  • Blueberries – In season, already picked and u-pick.
  • Summer Vegetables –now and continuing through August.  We have a wide variety of vegetables; there is something for everyone.
  • Sweet Corn – Available in bulk quantities most days or pre order
  • Canning Tomatoes – probably starting early August
  • Peaches – In about two weeks.  We no longer grow any but will try to get some from another farm.
  • Summer Apples – Summer variety apples are typically softer and tarter, good for applesauce, fresh eating, and cooking.
  • Concord and Niagara Grapes – probably starting mid- to late September
Camp Tavor Bikers
Last Sunday, we welcomed the “bikers” from Camp Tavor (across the lake from us).  Each summer, a group of camp parents and supporters embark on a multi-day bike ride from Chicago to the camp.  We appreciate their stopping by for a quick rest on that last mile!
Blueberries and U-Pick Blueberries
Already Picked
We have already picked blueberries from Brookside Farms in Paw Paw, our long term supplier.  They are available by the pint, quart, 5-pound box, and 10-pound box.  The season typically lasts through most of August.
U-Pick
Our small field opens at 9 am and closes when the market closes.  Please note that berries are best picked in the coolness of the morning as they tend to get soft in warmer temperatures.  (And many pickers get hot and tired!)

The Jersey variety is available now and are very good though smaller in size than the Duke variety.  This will probably be the last week for our u-pick.  Our small field is mainly a place where you can bring your family for a berry picking experience and leave with a few to take home.

If you are looking to pick a larger quantity to make pies, jam, freeze, etc. we recommend you contact Brookside Farms.  They have many acres of u-pick blueberries and are very family oriented.  Call (269) 657-3500 or check their Facebook page for updates.

Ideas for Using Fresh Produce
Over the years, we’ve collected an assortment of recipes that use our produce.  We haven’t tried them all, but we look for recipes that we would like to eat and are relatively easy to make.  We invite you to visit the recipe page on our website for ideas.

Fresh Corn Pancakes with Blueberry Sauce
Corn and blueberries are a beloved, if slightly surprising summer combination.  They partner up in this twist on classic buttermilk pancakes, perfect for a summer brunch or special leisurely breakfast.  A mix of all-purpose flour and cornmeal gives the pancakes a wonderfully light texture and makes them the perfect vehicle for sweet, crunchy corn kernels.  The simple blueberry sauce comes together quickly, with only four ingredients.  Try any leftover sauce reheated on vanilla ice cream, with crumbled oatmeal cookies, for a blueberry cobbler-like dessert.

Brenda tried this recipe this week and liked it.  “It was an interesting combination of ingredients but was surprisingly good.  These are definitely ‘brunch type’ pancakes with the sweet corn and corn meal.  It takes a little time to make the pancakes and sauce; next time I’ll make the blueberry sauce in advance.  It made 12 medium sized pancakes.  I don’t keep buttermilk in stock so I substituted with a fresh milk/vinegar solution.  On one pancake, I used both the blueberry sauce and maple syrup – it was really good!”
How to Preserve Food
Ball Mason, a leader in home canning supplies, has a set of canning and preserving guides available.  They describe the process and include how-to information on canning, freezing, pickling, dehydration, and making jam for a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Michigan is one of the most agriculturally diverse states in the nation, producing over 300 different types of commodities, according to the Michigan Farm Bureau. Agriculture is the state’s second-largest industry, bringing more than $125 billion to the state’s economy.  The agriculture industry is becoming increasingly important to the state economy.  The state set a record in agriculture-related exports in 2024.

Michigan’s agricultural diversity would not have been possible without Michigan’s hardworking farmers, the research conducted at Michigan State University’s farms, and the bountiful supply of freshwater from the Great Lakes.
