School has started, routines have shifted, but we’re still holding on to the best parts of summer.  We have received the first rain here in about 20 days, and the weather has cooled.  We are so grateful for both as it gives our fall crops of apples, pears and grapes, a chance to rest and enjoy a long drink of water.
Sunflower Experience 2025
The sunflowers are ready, yes, a week earlier than planned thanks to Mother Nature’s heat blast of the past few weeks.  So, we will be opening our fields this Saturday for the season.  We expect them to go through Labor Day weekend.

Please check our website or Facebook page for information on our 2025 Sunflower Experience.  Details including admission and hours will be posted soon.

Preparing the Sunflower Field
Many activities are underway to get the sunflower field ready for opening this coming Saturday.  The field has now been cut, and a crew worked today to clear the stalks out of the way and smooth the walking path.  Our canine helper did his share by moving and even trying to eat the stalks!
Someone always has to be different

Time to Can and Freeze
Late summer is also the peak time to can and freeze while summer’s bounty is plentiful.  We currently have sweet corn, tomatoes, peaches, and blueberries in bulk to “put up for the Winter”.  These popular fruits and vegetables will be here for maybe a week or two, and then they will be gone for another year.

If you can or freeze, we highly recommend you get your bulk produce this week.  The crops are ripening ahead of schedule due to our recent heat and warmer night temperatures.  Sadly, the rain has caused many of the tomatoes in the field to split.

We try to keep bulk produce in stock, but we recommend you order in advance to ensure we have it ready for you.  Call 269-244-5690.  If possible, please bring containers to get your items home.  Boxes, tubs, laundry baskets, reusable grocery bags, etc. are helpful.

Canning and Freezing
We acknowledge that canning takes some know-how and special equipment, but freezing is simpler.  There is much information and demos online on how to can, freeze, and preserve food in general.  Even some air fryers are capable of hydrating produce to create tasty snacks for off-season months.  (Think dried blueberries and dried tomato slices to add to sauces or salads!)

There are so many reasons to can and freeze!  It saves money, the food tastes better, you know what you are eating, and it’s overall healthier for you.  If you’re not sure how to get started or lack confidence in the process, team up with a family member or friend.  After all, those who can, can!  And most are willing to share their knowledge with others.

TRHS Class of ’75 Reunion
Beth’s Three Rivers High School Class of ’75 held their reunion brunch with us this past Sunday, the end of their celebratory weekend.  We enjoyed seeing them and being able to provide them with a relaxing spot to reconnect, enjoy great food from the farm, and reminisce.

The brunch was held to raise funds for the Three Rivers Promise on behalf of the Class of ’75 and Corey Lake Orchards.  Bruce Ruesink spoke to the class on behalf of the Three Rivers Promise Board.

We started picking Ginger Gold apples this week.  They are an attractive early fall apple, aromatic and have a gingery-sweet to mildly tart flavor.  This apple is great for snacks, salads and especially baking in pies.  It has similar characteristics to its Golden Delicious parent and is a decent keeper.  Available in small quantities (1/4 and 1/2 pecks).

Grocery
We offer select grocery products like salad dressing, jam, jelly, salsa, fresh eggs, cheese, yogurt, fresh milk, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, crackers, chips, meats, dog treats, and more.  We focus on offering products from companies located in Michigan, to support Michigan-grown and Michigan-made!

Amish Country Dairy
Enjoy fresh, pure milk from Amish Country Dairy located in Shipshewana, Indiana.  It has a cream top so you’ll need to shake it up before using.  It is pasteurized at a lower temperature, but not homogenized, and is easily consumed by those individuals who are lactose intolerant.  We carry gallons and half gallons in plain white milk and 16-ounce bottles in seasonal fruit and other flavors.

Alcohol
We have a variety of spirits, wines, and hard ciders – most made on the farm using our surplus fruit and cider.

While still enjoying the summer-like weather, try a chilled bottle of our Corey Lake Crisp.  It is a dry white blend with a finish not unlike biting into a perfectly crisp apple.

Gifts
We carry an assortment of gift items from local artisans.  Perfect for when you need a gift, especially for those who are difficult to shop for.  We also have gift bags, tissue paper, and cards.  Check out our sunflower gifts!
The Recipe Rack
Ideas for Using Fresh Produce
Over the years, we’ve collected an assortment of recipes that use our produce.  We haven’t tried them all, but we look for recipes that we would like to eat and are relatively easy to make.  We invite you to visit the recipe page on our website for ideas.
Quick Fresh Tomato Sauce
While at the market, pick up some of our tomato seconds and make a batch of tomato sauce!  Fill a few zip-top bags for the freezer, too.
Easy Homemade Peach Jam Recipe (No Pectin)
If you have some peach seconds or peaches getting too ripe, consider making some quick peach jam.  It keeps for up to three weeks in the fridge.
How to Preserve Food
Ball Mason, a leader in home canning supplies, has a set of canning and preserving guides available.  They describe the process and include how-to information on canning, freezing, pickling, dehydration, and making jam for a variety of fruits and vegetables.
