Whenever there are heatwave warnings in effect, we may not open or close early.  Please check our Facebook page for a post or call us before you come over.

The first day of Summer arrived in a ‘sunsational’ and hot fashion!  Someone forgot to tell Mother Nature that the Dog Days of August is not for another two months!

The heat has been hard on all the crops whether in the field, orchard, or greenhouse, and all of us humans who need to work outdoors to maintain them.  We appreciate all of you who left the coolness of the lake, pool, or air conditioning to shop at the market on these hot days, especially expressing thanks to us for being open.

The unexpected heat blast moved crops along quicker than normal, so you will find some fruits and vegetables arriving this week.  It also took its toll on strawberries, causing the season to finish earlier than any of us would have wanted.

We hope to see you this week!

Dogs Visiting our Market
This sweet dog visited our market and her “person” watched over her while others in the group shopped.  We love that this dog stopped right in front of our dog policy sign and greeted us.  We rewarded her with dog treats on the way out!!

We love all of your pets, but due to the food safety law with us being both a farm market and a licensed food facility, we cannot have dogs on our market area.  But they are welcome to be outside with you around the market spaces.

More on our dog policy.

Looking Ahead

  • Strawberries – finished for the year
  • Sweet Cherries – We no longer grow any and the crop in Michigan is light this year, so we may or may not be able to get them for our market.  We’ll let you know if and when we can get them.  The sweet cherry season has started on the west side of the state.
  • Tart Cherries – we no longer grow any.  Please check with Shultz Fruitridge Farms in Mattawan.
  • Blueberries – have ripened earlier due to the heat. See below for details on already picked and u-pick.
  • Summer Vegetables – starting now and continuing into July and August with even more of your favorites.  This week we picked lots of zucchini, yellow summer squash, and broccoli.
Strawberry and Blueberry Updates
Strawberry Season has Ended
The rain and the heat have finished off the strawberries for the year.  They were delightful while they lasted.

Like you, we are disappointed that the weather prevented us from opening more days for U-pick strawberries.  We are appreciative of those that were able to pick on the few days we were open.  On one of our last u-pick days, we loved our visit by the ‘strawberry shortcake sisters’ and their darling strawberry shortcake dolls!

Blueberry Update
Already Picked.  Starting Saturday afternoon, we will have already picked blueberries from Brookside Farms in Paw Paw, our long term supplier.  They are available by the pint, quart, 5-pound box, and 10-pound box.  The season typically lasts about 6 weeks.

U-Pick.  Starting Friday, we will open our small field for u-pick.  Until more berries are ripe, there will be a two-quart limit.  Our small field is mainly a place where you can bring your family for a berry picking experience and leave with a few to take home.

If you are looking to pick a larger quantity to make pies, jam, freeze, etc. we recommend you contact Brookside Farms.  They have many acres of u-pick blueberries and are very family oriented.  Call (269) 657-3500 or check their Facebook page for updates.
On the Market
Here’s what we will have:

  • Red Raspberries – hopefully starting late Friday morning
  • Blueberries – hopefully starting Saturday afternoon
  • Summer vegetables – carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, radishes, zucchini, yellow squash
  • Greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers
  • Lettuces and produce from Bankson Lake Farms (produce arrives Friday mornings and typically lasts through the weekend)
  • Assorted fresh baked goods including ‘take and bake’ fruit pies and strombolis
  • Local maple products, honey, jams, jellies, and salsas, Jake’s meats, milk, eggs, cheeses, yogurt, and ice cream
  • Alcohol products – hard ciders, wines, spirits
  • Nice selection of gifts made by our local artisans, perfect for birthdays, hostess, pet/house sitters, or yourself!
  • Ice-cold slushies, small and large, in three sure-to-please flavors.
  • U-pick herbs, see the list on market of what is available
  • Fresh flowers – We will soon have some of our own flowers available by the stem, but until then, you can get the flower bouquets by going directly to Flowerfield Farms in Three Rivers.
Across the Market
Bakery
We are busy making assorted baked goods.

  • Assorted “take and bake” fruit pies including our seasonal strawberry-rhubarb pies (frozen)
  • Assorted cookies, muffins, and breads
  • Donuts – Saturday, and Sunday in buttermilk, blueberry, and cherry flavors
  • Iced “googly” eye yeast ring donuts on Saturday and Sunday
  • Moe’s “take and bake” strombolis (frozen)

Mini fruit pies, back after many requests!  We made these years ago when we first opened the bakery.  They were very popular, especially for those who didn’t really want to have to finish a whole pie, or those families where everyone has to have their own favorite!  We are bringing them back in ‘take and bake” for this weekend.  Find them in our freezer.  Over the 4th of July holiday weekend, we will have them for sale already baked and packaged with 2 forks on top!!

Returning for the Year – Our own homemade cinnamon bread and cinnamon rolls!  This bread is everyone’s favorites for making French toast!  And our popular cinnamon rolls are popular!

Both will be available beginning Friday morning.

Not returning this year – fry pies.  Many of you have been asking when we will have the fry pies from Yoder’s Country Market in Centreville.  We will not be carrying those this year, but you can still get them at their store.  We hope our mini pies will be a nice substitute for those.
Grocery
We offer select grocery products like salad dressing, jam, jelly, salsa, fresh eggs, cheese, yogurt, fresh milk, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, crackers, chips, meats, dog treats, and more.  We focus on offering products from companies located in Michigan, to support Michigan-grown and Michigan-made!
Alcohol
We have a variety of spirits, wines, and hard ciders – most made on the farm using our surplus fruit and cider.

Note: Saturday tastings will occur on some weekends only, check or call us to see if we are having one.  We will not have one this Saturday.

This is the time of year to enjoy a bottle of our Bramblin’ Raspberry Rose.  It is a semi-sweet, full on fruit wine that will tickle your taste buds just like its ever-spreading brambles trickle over one’s yard.

The Recipe Rack
Ideas for Using Fresh Produce
Over the years, we’ve collected an assortment of recipes that use our produce.  We haven’t tried them all, but we look for recipes that we would like to eat and are relatively easy to make.  We invite you to visit the recipe page on our website for ideas.
Happenings on the Farm
We are working carefully during the heat doing the most important work, that of maintaining our crops.  This heat and humidity bring in many pests and diseases that we work to prevent from damaging our fruits and vegetables.

Similar to what may be occurring in your own gardens and lawns, there appears to be an increase in weed growth, giving us the tedious job of removing by hand and hoe!

Below you can see how various crops are growing and the predicted time they will be ready, all dependent on Mother Nature’s cooperation of course.

We have been busy staking our field tomatoes, tying them, and watching them grow!

Blueberry bushes for u-pick.  Many of our bushes are not tall and easy for children to reach.
Broccoli, already starting with more coming.
So many tomatoes coming from the greenhouse now.
Green beans, in about a week.
Onions, coming soon as bulbs and fully matured in August.
Cabbage, not too far off.
Acorn squash, early fall
Bartlett pears on track for end of August.
Gala apples gaining size, early September.
Concord and Niagara grapes, end of September.
Thank you for your continued support and for buying local.
Everyone at Corey Lake Orchards wishes you a happy Summer!
