Today is Earth Day.
For over 50 years, Earth Day has been celebrated across the country and around the globe and has been a day for awareness and action on for environmental causes. Though Earth Day is just one day, many take the initiative throughout the year to better our planet.Earth Day 2024 focuses on eliminating plastic usage “for the sake of human and planetary health.” There is a goal to decrease plastic production by 60% by 2040 through shopping sustainably, participating in cleanups, and practicing climate literacy. Find out more at www.earthday.org.
Every Day is Earth Day on the Farm.
As a farm, we understand the importance of taking care of our planet and preserving it for future generations. Here are several ways with your help that we are working to contribute to a healthier planet. This year we are taking even more steps to reduce plastic use in packaging. You will find us using more paper bags and other earth-friendly containers. We encourage you to bring your own reusable bags when you shop here.
You may notice that we don’t mow the edges of our fields, orchards, or vineyards, saving as many natural flowers as we can. These flowers, including dandelions, are a great source of food for so many pollinators. This little bee is doing its job on this dandelion flower, and we hope that it moves to a pear blossom next!
Freshly tilled soil always reminds us of the huge responsibility we have to take care of the soil, it’s the foundation of producing food to feed all of us.
Seeing a sunset over our greenhouse means that the sun was out this day, warming the soil and providing natural heat for everything planted in the greenhouse, providing energy to create photosynthesis for growing. (Remember that term from your grade school days?!!)
Spring blossoms are a reminder of what is to come and provide us with comfort and hope for another season.
On this Earth Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to consider small changes you can make in your daily lives that will ultimately help protect our planet. Together, we can create a more sustainable future for all.
Thank you for your continued support and for buying local. Everyone at Corey Lake Orchards wishes you a happy spring!
